I’m sorry, I don’t usually like to complain to social networking, but this must be shared. Today as I’m sitting in the radio room at the firehouse, waiting for the trucks to come back from a couple calls, a woman comes up to the front of the building. She had a question for the chief so I told her they’re returning from a call right now, you can wait for him. I’m casually standing there with her and she asks, “oh so what are you here cooking lunch for the guys??” I confidently reply, “No ma’am, I am a firefighter.”
It’s amazing how stereotypical people can be and it upsets me to think women don’t believe in themselves to try different things and help others, just because it would involve doing a job mainly dominated by men. The firehouse is my family, the guys there are brother and father-figures to me. Women, don’t ever underestimate your capabilities, be who you want to be and be proud. I am a proud member of Ulster Hose Company #5.
